About
My name is Ashley Ridler
I graduated from the University of Delaware in 2013, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Services and minors in Psychology and Spanish. After my studies at UD, I was a Spanish teacher in Michigan and Delaware for almost 10 years! In 2023, I welcomed a career transition as I became the Associate Director for Reunions and Affinity Programs at the University of Delaware. Currently, I plan reunions at Homecoming and Alumni Weekend, and a part of that role requires posting photo and video content to promote the events! I've never taken a class in photography, so I'm excited to learn more in this summer course.

Goals for Summer 2025
1) Learn new ways to use an iPhone and digital camera to capture all of the special moments.
2) Collaborate with classmates on projects throughout the summer and learn from them and their blog posts!
3) Learn vocabulary and jargon in the photography world to improve my skills as a photographer.

Dozen Photo Challenge
This photo that depicts low perspective is my most successful photo for the dozen photo challenge. I believe this is the most successful photo because you get a different perspective of this alley way because I chose to lower the camera to take the photo. In this picture, you get a better view of the railings and tree that are in the picture as well, with the railings creating some symmetry. In the future, I want to try playing with different perspectives when I take photos. Specifically, I want to move around objects to see how they can be pictured in different lighting scenarios.

Critiquing Photo Challenge
Scroll down to see six different photos that fall into different categories. It's been an exciting week learning new things in photography!
DESCRIPTIVE PHOTO

This photo is a descriptive photo because it shows a photo that is used for a passport. The photo has a purpose to show identification when traveling outside of the United States.
AESTHETICALLY EVALUATIVE PHOTO

This is an aesthetically evaluative photo because it depicts a landscape that was captured in Union City, NJ. This photo was taken at sunset and was especially intriguing to me because of the cloud formation and colors.

EXPLANATORY PHOTO
This photo is an explanatory photo because it provides answers as to what was happening in a given moment in time. This photo was taken at the Phillies Game on Friday, June 20, 2025 and the Phillies beat the Mets!
INTERPRETIVE PHOTO

This is an interpretive photo because the photo was staged and involves a person. In this photo, you can view the child either waiting with anticipation or perhaps looking out the window with curiosity.
ETHICALLY EVALUATIVE PHOTO

THEORETICAL PHOTO

This is an ethically evaluative photo because it brings awareness to a social cause. In this photo, she appears to have compassion for the homeless in her community.
These two pictures are theoretical photos because they make the viewer guess their reality.

Assignment
For my photographer review, I chose Manuel Rivera-Ortiz. Please scroll to the youtube video and see my work!
For this assignment, I chose to review Manuel Rivera-Ortiz's work in photography. Manuel's work primarily focuses on highlighting social issues across the globe, particularly the social issue of poverty. While his photographs depict the plight of his subjects, he also manages to capture their resilience in his photos as well. Manuel Rivera-Ortiz's work has culminated in supporting his foundation, which allows underrepresented photographers an avenue for learning and improving their craft.
I really appreciated learning about how Manuel uses photos as a space to promote social causes. For me, photography has always been something I like to do to capture moments in my life, but I appreciate how Manuel captures the lives of other people who live across the globe and live in much different circumstances than myself. For this project, I came to learn that photography can be used for multiple purposes, not just to entertain but to also inform an audience. While I may not be taking a lot of ethically evaluative photos like Manuel, his work is certainly a necessity in the photography community.
Emulating a Professional Photographer
For this assignment, I chose to emulate Erin Babnik, a professional photographer who typically captures landscape photos. Here is her website: https://erinbabnik.com/portfolio/

Course Goals and Achievements
I have been able to accomplish all of my goals for this photography course over this summer session. I've learned new methods of taking photos with my iPhone and digital camera, and I've also gained more ideas for how to take photos from classmates and viewing their blogs. I've learned that most of the photos that I like to take are "aesthetically evaluative" and I'd probably make for a great landscape photographer one day! I've also learned that photography can be more than capturing a moment. It can be intended to make a statement toward a social or political cause. I hope to continue to learn more about photography in the future!
